“For many years, I hade chronic pain in my back and frequent slipped discs. I was treated by doctors and chiropractors, stretched regularly, had massages and did strength training for my back muscles. It felt as if I had tried everything. From time to time my back was OK, but the slipped discs kept coming back and the pain was always there.
In autumn 2004 I read about the relaxing and pain relieving effects of the Acupressure Mat. I tried to find an Indian Acupressure Mat to buy, but soon found that they did not exist here or anywhere in the world. However, I found many instructions on how to make your own Indian Acupressure Mat. They were largely based on two sheets of hardboard and hundreds of 4-inch nails.
I finally decided to manufacture an Indian Acupressure Mat with a number of characteristics in mind :
- It should be gentle, and not puncture the skin at all.
- It should have an adjustable effect.
- It should be possible to adjust the size of it.
- It had to be washable.
- It had to have the right amount of needles in exactly the right places.
- It has been an exciting journey from the initial idea to creating a product which has helped me and now helps many other people.

The other day I was talking to Asa from Bookham Chiropracic Clinic in Church Road; she was telling me about an exciing discovery she made on a recent trip home to Sweden; apparently in Sweden Acupressure
Mats are incredibly popular. The Swedes are very into their alternaive therapies and everyone seems to own one of these mats which are used to help with a number of problems including pain relief, insomnia, depression, ibromyalgia, stress and blood pressure problems. Asa was so impressed with what she heard from her friends and family that she decided to bring Acupressure Mats back to Bookham; in fact she has exclusive rights to supply them in the UK! So what exactly are these strange mats and what do they actually do?
Acupressure Mats have actually been in use for many years; they are considered to be ‘The Mother of Acupuncture’ being used to simulate the body’s energy low long before the more commonly known needles were used for this purpose. From a physical side the points on the mat simulate the release of endorphins and a range of other calming hormones within the body, which in turn, help with natural pain relief and also increases the blood & lymph circulaion which has a healing efect. The result is a sense of deep relaxaion and natural well being.
Asa asked me if I would like to have a go! Although a litle apprehensive, being somewhat cowardly when it comes topain! I said I would be happy to try out this intriguing therapy!
The mat is made from Thermo Plasic Elastomer, which is basically a strong non-allergic material and consists of a high density of plasic spines which have been arranged in a way to best simulate the body’s internal abiliies to heal. They contain no latex or PVC.
Still wearing my tee shirt I hesitantly lay down on the mat, Asa was there to reassure me and some relaxing music played. It was a litle uncomfortable at irst but prety soon I started to relax and realised I hadn’t needed to be nervous! I lay on the mat for about 40 minutes and
by the end I was so relaxed I very nearly fell asleep. Luckily I don’t have any back or neck pain so was unable to judge how the mat may help a condiion such as this, but I must say I did feel very calm aterwards. So many of us live life in the fast lane and I personally think there is an awful lot to be said for some of these tradiional therapies; I found the session rather like a meditaion – some ime out to recharge and relax really helps to get you through the day.
Endorphins lowing I let feeling calm and energised to coninue with my day. Asa is happy to welcome you for a free trial session like the one I enjoyed.

I have suffered with back problems and stress for some time. Luckily I was introduced to the Acupressure mat two months ago and I have used it regularly ever since. Initially I found it a bit painful and was not sure if it would help me, but then I have gradually built up time using the mat. Now I use it more or less every day for 30-40 minutes at a time and mostly in the evening after a long day. I am finding it very relaxing and it takes the pain and stresses away. Sometimes I fall asleep whilst using the mat. It is very easy to use. No need to undress, you can adjust the pressure of the nails with a tee-shirt or a towel. I prefer a firm surface which means I mostly rest the mat on top of my bed. Sometimes whilst watching TV I use part of the mat behind my back in the armchair. This is also of great help. I can highly recommend the Acupressure mat. E W, Surrey
